Step #8. After that go to OS X VM and enter full-screen mode, Wait a while for the file and then it will run automatically, so when VMware tools dialog box appears then click on Install VMware Tools.

Automating installation of VMware Tools for Mac OS X

After publishing my recent article on automating the silent installation of VMware Tools for Linux guestOSes, I received a similar question regarding Mac OS X guests and whether the existing script would also apply. The answer is no since Mac OS X packages differ from the Linux installres, but it is possible to automate the installation of VMware Tools for Mac OS X guests.

After quickly looking into this, I realized there are actually several options that are available to customers and it would depend on how you would like to install VMware Tools and what platform you are running your Mac OS X guests on. I will share a couple of options which also includes existing solutions that have already been developed. At the end of the day, the choice will ultimately be up to the administrator on how he/she would like to proceed.

Option 1 - If you are a vSphere/ESXi customer running Mac OS X, you will probably want to mount the VMware Tools installer and then initiate an installation within the Guest. You can actually perform the entire operation within a single context by leveraging our vSphere API to issue the VMware Tools installer and then using the Guest Operations API to perform the installation.

Option 2 - Similar to the above option, if you do not wish to use the vSphere API, you can simply copy the darwin.iso (VMware Tools) image onto your Mac OS X guests and then perform the automated install. This would be the most simplistic option and would apply to running Mac OS X guests on either vSphere/ESXi or Fusion.

Option 3 - You can also download VMware Tools using VMware's online repository (thanks to Rich Trouton for sharing this tidbit) and then performing the installation which is very similar to Option 2. The only downside is if you are running Mac OS X on vSphere/ESXi, the status of VMware Tools will show "unsupported" as the version will differ from version distributed with vSphere/ESXi. In fact, Rich Trouton has an existing solution that he has published here which you can read more about.

If you are already familiar with using the vSphere API and are using vSphere/ESXi, I personally would go with Option 1 just because you can stay within a single context from an automation standpoint and not have to jump between different interfaces. If you not comfortable, want a quick solution or running just Fusion, then Option 2 and 3 would be ideal. Below is an example Gist demonstrating a simple shell script which implements Option 2 and Option 3 with a slight twist from what Rich has done which does not require Git.

Steps to Install macOS High Sierra on VMware on Windows

Step 1: Extract High Sierra Virtual Image File

Download and install Winrar or 7Zip, then Right Click on “macOS High Sierra.rar” and Select Extract Here.

Step 2: Install VMware Player

VMware Player is available for non-commercial use and can be seen as free.

Step 3: Patch the VMware

Open Patch Tool folder then right click on win-install.cmd file, Select “Run as Administrator”

Step 4: Create a New Virtual Machine

Open VMware Player and select “Create New Virtual Machine”. Select “Install the Operating system later” and Guest OS is macOS, Version is 10.13 or 10.12.

Change your Virtual machine name and location (this is VMX Folder). Then click Finish.

Step 5: Edit Your Virtual Machine

Select your High Sierra and click “Edit your Virtual Machine”. Set up 50% – 65% of RAM and CPU.

Installing Mac OSX 10.8 on VMWare Workstation

Previously in my class, i had this issue where as we have not enough Apple Mac laptop for participants to experience the usage of Mac OSX, so the easiest way is to virtualize Mac OSX on VMware, so on this Blog post this time lets go through a step by step how you can virtualize Mac OSX using VMware Workstation 9 @ 10 in Windows Server 2012 and what you need to get things started…

Before we get started, you will need to download few files to make sure the process go through without any hiccup.

Files you will need:

1 – Mac OS X 10.8 Installation Files (please download yourself)

2 – VMware Workstation 9 (i’m very sure you know where to get this…)

3 – dmg2img

4 – VMware Unlocker 1.3.0

5 – VMware tools from Fusion

1 – Install VMware on your System (PC @ Laptop)

– Make sure you uninstall Hyper-V if you are running Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V installed

– You cannot have Hyper-V and VMware Workstation installed on the same machine

 

2 – Run VMware Unlocker 1.3.0, right click install.cmd and run as administrator..

 

3 – Next, you need to extract out the InstallESD.dmg from the Mac OS X 10.8 installation files.

— i recommend that you use 7zip to extract the InstallESD.dmg…

4 – once you successfully extract the Mac OS X 10.8 installation files, browse to OSX installation folder and look for 2.hfs file and open this file with 7zip.

5 – in 7zip interface, browse to 2.hfs\install MAC OS X Mountain Lion\Install OS X Mountain Lion.app\Contents\SharedSupport\ folder, in this folder you need to extract the InstallESD.dmg file…

6 – Next,  we going to use dmg2img program to create a ISO from InstallESD.dmgto iso format…

— Open command prompt and type dmg2img -i “path\installesd.dmg” -o “path\macosxsetup.iso”

— “path” depending on where you keep your MAC OSX installer files…

7 – Next, we need to extract the com.vmware.fusion.tools.darwin.zip to get the darwin.iso from under \payload folder.

8 – Next, fire up your VMWare Workstation 9 and click Create a New Virtual Machine…

9 – on New New Virtual Machine Wizard box, click Typical (recommended) and then click Next…

10 – Next, Click Installer disc image file (iso): and click Browse button and look for macosxsetup.iso file that you extracted from the InstallESD.dmg… and then click Next to proceed…

11 – On the New Virtual Machine Wizard box, click Apple Mac OS X and choose Mac OS X 10.8 64-bit and click Next…

12 – In the Virtual machine name :, key in any name you prefer and you can locate any location for the Mac OS X to be installed…

13 – next, under Specify Disk Capacity, i choose 80GB for my Mac OS X hard disk space and click Store virtual disk as single file and then click Next to proceed…

14 – Next, click Customize Hardware…

15 – on the Hardware box, i choose 4096MB (4GB) Memory, 2 processors and i delete floppy.. you can customize you own hardware specification depending on your Host specification…

16 – Next, click Power on this virtual machine to proceed with our MAC OS X installation…

17 – If everything setup correctly, your MAC OS X will boot up nicely with Apple logo…

18 – Next, on the installation interface, click next button to proceed…

19 – Next, we need to format our virtual drive before start installing the MAC OS X,

— on the OS X utilities interface, click Disk Utility and click continue…

20 – On the VMware, VMware Virtual S Media interface, click your Virtual Disk and then click Erase tab, confirm that you choose Mac OS Extended Journaled as a format, then click Erase…

21 – Click Erase to proceed…

22 – Next, after your drive successfully erase and formatted, click Disk Utility menu and click Quit Disk Utility…

23 – Next, on the OS X Utilities box, click Reinstall OS X and click Continue…

24 – Next, on the OS X Mountain Lion interface, click Continue…

25 – click Agree…

26 – Click Agree again…

 

27 – Click installation Drive and click Install to proceed…

28 – until this step, what you need to do is just wait for the installation to complete…

29 – it will take around 20 minutes for the installation to complete, but it all depend on your Host specification…

30 – After installation complete with few restart, you will get Welcome page, choose your country and click Continue…

31 – Next, on the Select your Keyboard, just click Continue to proceed…

32 – Next, on the Transfer Information to This Mac, click Not Now and click Continue…

33 – on the Enable Location Services, click Continue to proceed…

34 – Next, on the Apple ID page, i will skip this option for the moment ( you may key in your Apple ID if you have one) …

35 – On the Terms and Conditions interface, click Continue…

36 – Next, on the Create Your Computer Account interface, key in all the necessary information and click Continue…

37 – Next, select Your Time Zone and click Continue….

38 – Finally, on the Thank You interface, click Start using your Mac…

39 – After your Virtual Mac OS X restart, don’t be happy yet… we still need to install VMware Tools (darwin.iso)… click VM menu, click Removable Devices, click CD/DVD (IDE) and click Settings…

40 – On the Virtual Machine Settings interface, click  CD/DVD (IDE), then click Browse… in the Browse for ISO Image, click darwin.iso…

41 – On your Mac desktop, VMware Tools will automatically pop up, and click Install VMware Tools to proceed…

42 – Next, on the Install VMware Tools, click Continue…

43 – Next, click Install to proceed with the installation…

44 – Next, click Continue Installation…

45 – Next, click restart.. after your Mac restart, you will have a complete usable Mac OS X running in your VMware…

In this article, I’m going to show you how to install macOS High Sierra on VMware on Windows 10. In WWDC17, Apple has announced their new products and some cool features. macOS High Sierra 10.13 is one of the announcements at WWDC 2017. This year’s version of macOS is more of a maintenance release than a full-on new version. Called High Sierra, the new operating system is more about refinements than new features, as it aims to make your Mac more reliable, capable, and responsive while laying the foundation for future innovations in the worlds of VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality).

But of course, there will be cool stuff to play with right away. Even if there aren’t any major new features, High Sierra is still packed with a ton of cool stuff. To test the Apple new Mac operating system macOS High Sierra. You can only do that if you have an Apple computer (Mac) laptops or an iMac but there in this article, I am going to show you how you can install macOS high Sierra on Windows on VMware, so you don’t need to buy an expensive Apple computer.

Before you get started to install macOS High Sierra on VMware on Windows there are some requirement and tasks to do.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 GB Memory
  • Minimum 2 cores of processors
  • Hard disk free space 80 GB
  • Graphics memory 256 MB
  • Your system should support Intel or AMD VT (Virtualization Technology)
  • VT (Virtualization Technology) Should be enabled from BIOS setup.

As mentioned in the section above your system should have the virtualization technology and after that, you should enable that from your system BIOS. First, you should boot into your system BIOS then find the VT option and enable that. You can find how to boot into your system BIOS by this guide.

To get started you need to download the following materials in order to install macOS High Sierra on VMware on Windows.

Step #1: Extract macOS High Sierra Image

Once you have downloaded the macOS High Sierra image file, then you should extract it via WinRAR or 7zip after that you can use this image. To unzip the file, just right-click on file then select“Extract Here.“ It will take around 5 minutes.

Step #2: Install VMware on Your PC

Get the VMware from the link above. Once you have downloaded the VMware Workstation, then Install it on your Windows PC. To install VMware, just click on the setup then hit Next and Next. Finally, click “Finished.” If you have installed already, then skip this step.

Step #3: Unlock VMware via Patch Tools

Firstly, make sure you download the latest version of Patch tools from the link mentioned above. Then Extract the file from Zip format. Open “Patch Tool > Unlocker Master” then right-click on win-install.cmd and select Run as Administrator. It will install the patch file in the VMware for macOS High Sierra and older versions in order to unlock VMware and let you install macOS on it.

Wait for a little while then the command prompt window will disappear automatically when the VMware is patched or unlocked.

Step #4: Create & Edit New Virtual Machine

#1. Now open VMware and click on “Create a New Virtual Machine”(Ctrl+N) then select Typical (Recommended) and click Next.

#2. Select“I will install the operating system later” and click Next.

#3. Now choose“Apple Mac OS X” from operating system list then select macOS 10.12 from version and click Next.

#4. Name the virtual machine macOS High Sierra or any other name that you like then browse a location to save virtual machine files like the VMX file and click Next. I suggest you leave the location as default and name it as shown in the shot below if it’s your first time.

Note: You need to save it somewhere you remember and in a separate folder because later on, you will need to edit on of this file.

#5. Don’t Specify the disk space just select Store virtual disk as a single file and click Next.

#6. The essential VM files for macOS High Sierra has been created, so go ahead and click Finish.

#7. Open the macOS High Sierra VM window on VMware workstation or player then click on Edit virtual machine settings.

Note: Don’t run the Virtual Machine until you made the essential steps.

#8. Increase the Memory from 2 GB to 4 or higher GB of Ram memory for better performance.

#9. Increase the CPU processor core from 2 cores to 4 or Higher cores for better performance.Finally, Click OK to save all the changes that you made virtual machine settings.

Step #6: Manage macOS High Sierra VMDK and Virtual Machine VMX file

#1. Now go to macOS High Sierra virtual machine files that you browsed and located in step 4.4. If you have left that steps as default then the files are saved in this location: This PC > Documents > Virtual Machine > virtual machine Name.  Here you need to replace the macOS High Sierra Image(8.87GB) with this existing VMDK (5 MB). Just drag the macOS High Sierra Image that you download and extracted in step #1 then drop it on the Virtual machine files. If you get a replace or skip files dialog box then click on Replace the in the destination.

Note: You have to name the macOS High Sierra Image as your virtual machine name. It should be the same in order to be replaced and make it work otherwise, you need to add the image manually. Also, the size should change from 5 MB to 9.57 GB after you replaced the VMDK.

#2. Now right-click on macOS High Sierra VMX and open it with Notepad.

#3. Scroll down to the end, and type (smc.version = “0”) or (“smc.version = 0″as alternative) then press Ctrl+S to save it.”

Step #7. Play the macOS High Sierra Virtual Machine

#1. Open macOS High Sierra VM window then click Power on this virtual machine.

Here you go and you don’t need to install macOS High Sierra because we have done that for you to save time, It is already installed on a virtual disk (VMDK). All you need to do now, perform a clean installation of macOS High Sierra to set it up as your needs. When you played the VM, then it should take you to the next step setting up macOS High Sierra in VMware.If no then you may miss any action or fail in any move, comment below and we will try our best for you.

#2. Choose your Country and click on Continue.

#4. Now choose your method to transfer information to this Mac and click on Continue. Here I don’t want to transfer any information.

#5. In this step, you can to Sign in with your Apple ID. If you have one, then create a free Apple ID via the article, how to create an Apple ID on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. If you don’t want to sign in with Apple ID or it doesn’t work, then Choose Don’t Sign in and Click on Continue.

#6. Agree to the Terms and Conditions.

#7. Fill out the Full name,  Account name, Password, Hint and check the box of Set time zone based on Current location. Then finally click on Continue to create your user account for macOS High Sierra 10.13, which will be installed.

#8. On the Expres Set Up page, you don’t want to do something just click Continue.
