Introducing VMware Tools 10.1 and 10.0.12

The next major release of VMware Tools – the collection of in-guest drivers and agents that optimize VM performance and increase manageability – will be delivered with VMware vSphere 6.5, and is also downloadable as of today from My VMware. As usual, this version of VMware Tools is compatible with previous vSphere releases, and several enhancements improve the overall manageability experience when used in conjunction with vSphere 6.5.

Bundling of Tools for most popular guests only

VMware ESXi 6.5 includes VMware Tools for the most commonly used guest operating systems; Tools for other guests are available for download from My VMware. Similarly, Tools updates for those same bundled guests will be distributed through Update Manager, as they have been in the past, via the tools-light VIB.

Bifurcation of Tools for legacy and current guests

This release of VMware Tools is comprised of two separate delivery vehicles. VMware Tools 10.1 will be available for OEM-supported guest operating systems only. Legacy guests that have fallen out of support by their respective vendors will be covered by “frozen” VMware Tools 10.0.12. The frozen Tools will not receive feature enhancements going forward. Note, therefore, that the logical upgrade path from 10.0.9 is not 10.0.12 for the vast majority of workloads – rather, it is 10.1.  For more information about support categorization for guest operating systems, see KB 2015161.

Guest OS granularity changes

With Tools 10.1 and 10.0.12 there are now two ISO images for certain families of guest operating systems in order to accommodate the bifurcation described above. Consequently, the configurable guest OS attribute for some guests in vSphere 6.5 has become more precise in order to support this change.

The most notable example of this change is CentOS: In vSphere 6.5, CentOS guest selections are available for CentOS 7, CentOS 6, and CentOS 4/5. In previous vSphere releases, these versions were all combined into a single selection: CentOS 4/5/6/7. Administrators can either edit the guest OS type or leverage the new VM configuration option tools.hint.imageName to ensure the proper ISO image is mounted to these VMs for Tools install and upgrade.

Please be aware that current Linux distributions ship with Open VM Tools, so most CentOS 7 VMs are likely running OVTs and are not affected by the above scenario. However, for those customers that have chosen to run the vSphere-bundled “Tar Tools” instead, please keep this change in mind.

Detailed display of type and version information in the Web Client

VMware Tools have always had two different designations: one is a human-readable version number, such as 10.0.7, and the other is an internal code, like 10247. With vSphere 6.5, the Web Client now displays both variations of the version number as well as the specific type of Tools installed in the guest OS, such as MSI, OSP, OVT, or TAR Tools.

 

Signed ISO images

VMware Tools have always been distributed as ISO images that can be mounted to individual VMs in order to install or upgrade. VMware ESXi 6.5 introduces a new layer of security by cryptographically verifying these ISO images each time they are accessed. To facilitate this verification, Tools distributions now include additional files with appropriate hashes. If manually extracting, moving, or curating a Tools repository, please ensure all of the supporting bundled files remain together.

Future Tools upgrades for older vSphere VMs

Given the very broad backward and forward compatibility of VMware Tools, it is possible that some customers are running VMs with the Tools that shipped as part of very old vSphere releases. vSphere 5.0 and 5.1 recently reached End of Support, and the VMware Tools that were bundled with those releases are also destined for a similar fate. Therefore, this is a great time to start planning to upgrade Tools 8.x and 9.0.x to the current version. In the future, those older Tools releases will not be directly upgradable to the latest Tools; instead, a two-phase upgrade will be required at that time.

New and more detailed documentation

One of the goals of decoupling the release of VMware Tools and vSphere was to enable more detailed information about updates through release notes. Starting with Tools 10.1, release notes will be further enhanced to include a table documenting the precise version number of each individual driver and component. Going beyond release notes, we now also offer stand-alone documentation for VMware Tools 10.1, including more information about management and functionality of the various elements.

Concluding

We hope that the new efforts to treat VMware Tools as top-tier products are beneficial to all customers. The enhanced documentation, security, and product functionality should be welcome news to vSphere administrators everywhere. The continued bundling certain popular Tools versions for supported and legacy guests, along with updates through VUM, ought to quell some of the concerns raised last year when we first announced the separation of Tools and vSphere.

The archive files initially released for Tools 10.1 and 10.0.12 included erroneous manifest files. When copied to an ESXi host for use, this creates a scenario where VMs that are not yet updated to the latest Tools release show a status of “unsupported” – which is not accurate.

On November 5, corrected archive files were re-published on My VMware. The build numbers, Tools installation files, and ISO images are unchanged. VMs that were updated to Tools 10.1 or 10.0.12 using the initial packages do not require another update. However, customers should re-download the Tools archive files and replace with the corrected version.

Customers can determine if the erroneous initial release is present by checking to see if the contents of *_avr_manifest.txt is identical to the corresponding *_avr_manifest.txt.sig. If so, the repository should be replaced with an updated copy.

Windows 10 on VMware Workstation 11, Improved VMware Tools, Shared Folder

VMware Inc has released their major update of desktop virtualization software VMware Workstation 11. As usual, several new and improved features added with additional host and guest Operating Systems support including Windows 10. Earlier, even the VMware workstation 9 handled the Windows 10 better than current version of Oracle VirtualBox. Currently VMware workstation 11 supports  Windows 10 guest OS officially and this guide shows you how to install Windows 10 and VMware tools, also setup VMware shared folders to share and access files between host and guest computers without network connection.

The performance of virtual machine and it’s display have been improved well in this latest version. Also other features including several view options (unity mode too), sound, USB 3.0 support and shared folders work fine.

So how about Oracle VirtualBox?, definitely Windows 10 will be supported by upcoming versions of VirtualBox in future. The Windows 10 is in the beta stage and once the final version hit the market somewhere in mid of 2015, we will have fully supported Oracle VirtualBox.

Installation of Windows 10 on VMware workstation 11

Since the Windows 10 guest OS is supported officially, the ‘easy install’ method detects and installs Windows 10 automatically. Just create a new virtual machine and browse the ISO file you have downloaded from Microsoft site. The easy install will detect and install the guest OS almost is unattended mode.

Installation steps are very easy and straightforward in easy install method, I’m not covering each steps here.

VMware tools will be installed automatically by easy install method, so you must get the full fledge and better performance Windows 10 guest virtual machine after the installation completed.

By any chance, if you think you need to install VMware tools on Windows 10 manually, you can initiate the installation process by accessing VM—> Install VMware Tools. After that you can execute the setup.exe in the CD drive of virtual machine.

Once VMware tools have been installed, the full screen and unity modes work perfectly. Even the Exclusive mode performs better with the latest version.

VMware Shared Folder in Windows 10 Guest Virtual Machine

To add VMware shared folders to the guest virtual machine to give access to particular disk drive or folder from host Operating Systems, click on the VM settings and go to options.

Select Shard Folders and enable it. You have an option to map the shared folder automatically inside the guest machine (which I have enabled in this example)

In this example, I have browsed the ‘E’ drive of host computer and left the same name ( you can give a separate name also).

Next option is to select whether you need to give ‘Read-only’ or write access to the shared folder from guest virtual machine. It depends on your requirement. If you need to write/modify any files or folders from guest Windows 10 in particular shared folder, then better do not select the ‘Ready Only’ option. If you are sharing the host computer’s system or high critical folder/partition, better enable the ‘Read Only’ option.

Once you have pressed OK, the shared folder will be appearing in the guest OS. Remember, we have not setup any network settings or connections to make this shared folder work, because VMware shared folders feature doesn’t require any network communication between host and guest, it works purely in application level with VMware tools.

How to Access VMware shared folder in Windows 10 guest Virtual Machine?

We have successfully did setup the folder, but how to access it?

Open the my computer (or file explorer) and you should be seeing a mapped network drive in the explore ( if ‘Map as network…’ option was selected earlier).  Opening the mapped network drive will take you to the shared folder of host computer.

If you have several VMware shared folders, then it is not a good idea to map all shares. So, if you have not enabled this feature, go to ‘Network’ from the Windows explorer, then select ‘vmware-host’ to see the shared folders.

Other features like sound, network and USB 3.0 support in guest virtual machine work without any issues.

Install VMware Tools on MacOS Sierra 10.12 to Enhance VM Performance

Now that you’ve known all about VMware Tools, let’s move towards installing it.

1# Run & Open VMware Tools

1. Once you have installed macOS Sierra or El Capitan on VMware, now power on the virtual machine and sign in. Navigate to VMware options> VM> Install VMware Tools, when the confirmation window pops up just hit Install.

Notice: You can install VMware Tools on any OS X using this method.

2. When the VMware tools window pops up, select Install VMware Tools.

After continuing, the installation will take a moment to install, and here’s what you’ll see but you have to restart the virtual machine in order to complete the process.

Once the virtual machine restarted, you’ll have all the enhancements and user experiences also have fixed the screen resolution + speed like the shot below. Also, you can drag & drop from guest OS to VM or from VM to guest OS and use mouse better than before.
