After upgrading a Terminal Server or Terminal Server-based Citrix XenApp virtual machine to VMware Tools 5.x, you experience these symptoms:

In the Windows Application Event log, you see this error reported multiple times in quick succession (log spew):

[ warning] [vmusr:vmusr] Error in the RPC receive loop: RpcIn: Unable to send.

Cause

This issue occurs when the VMware Tools daemon (vmtoolsd) handles more than two Terminal Sessions. When a user connects to a Windows virtual machine, each terminal session should have one vmtoolsd running; however, vmtoolsd is limited to only two sessions running simultaneously. Thus the Windows Application Event log fills up with warning messages similar to this until the total connection count is >2  per session:[vmusr:vmusr] Error in the RPC receive loop: RpcIn: Unable to send

This is correct:

Workaround

To work around this issue, disable VMware Tools logging to the Event Log and general virtual machine logging to the vmware.log file for the virtual machine.

To disable VMware Tools application event logging:

  1. Open the tools.conf file using a text editor. The tools.conf file is located at:
    • Windows XP and Windows Server 2000/2003:C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Tools\
    • Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008:C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools\
    • Linux:/etc/vmware-tools/tools.conf
  2. Add this section to the tools.conf file:[logging]vmusr.level = errorvmsvc.level = error
  3. Save and close the file.
  4. Restart the VMTools service (Administrative Tools > Services).Note: If there are users logged in to more than one session, restarting the VMTools service may not be sufficient. You may have to kill the vmtoolsd.exe process for all instances.

Carlo Costanzo from VMwareInfo.com has posted the following helpful article:

The SVGA II driver installed by VMware Tools doesn’t work with 2008 R2 or Windows 7.  Console sessions will randomly lockup.

http://communities.vmware.com/thread/218244?start=105&tstart=0

According to the thread there is a WDDM driver in U1 that you can install manually to fix the problem by browsing to –

“C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\Drivers\wddm_video“

A good one 🙂

Details: If you plan to use Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2 as a guest operating system, do not use the SVGA drivers included with VMware Tools. Use the standard SVGA driver instead.

Symptoms:

Freeze

Hanging Console

High CPU

Reboots

Solution:

To deselect the SVGA drivers installed with VMware Tools:

  1. When you install VMware Tools, select VMware Tools Custom Install and deselect the SVGA driver.

Alternatively, remove the SVGA driver from the Device Manager after installing VMware Tools

his article provides information about and steps for automating the VMware Tools upgrade in vCenter Server 4.0.

The following are required for automatic upgrades:

  • Virtual machines must have a version of VMware Tools shipped with ESX Server 3.0.1 or greater installed.
  • Virtual machines must be hosted on an ESX Server 3.0.1 or greater, and the vCenter Server must be version 2.0.1 or greater.
  • Virtual machines must be running a Linux or Windows guest operating system that is supported by ESX Server 3.0.1 or greater and vCenter 2.0.1 or greater.
  • Virtual machines must be powered on.

To configure virtual machines to automatically upgrade VMware Tools:

  1. Power off the virtual machine.
  2. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  3. On the Options tab, click VMware Tools.
  4. In the Advanced pane, select Check and upgrade Tools before each power-on and click OK.

Note: The next time the virtual machine is powered on, it checks the ESX/ESXi host for a newer version of VMware Tools. If one is available, it is installed and the guest operating system is restarted (if required).

How to Install VMware Tools on RHEL 7/CentOS 7

VMware Tools is one of important components for virtual machine (VM) in order get excellent performance. It is a group of utilities that help to enhances the overall performance of the virtual machine’s guest operating system (OS) and improves management of the VM. Without the VMware Tools, guest OS performance will lacks some of the important functionality. Below steps shows how to install the VMware Tools on RHEL 7, CentOS 7 and Oracle Linux 7.

How to Install VMware Tools ?

Option 1 (Recommended by VMware) – VMware support of open-vm-tools

open-vm-tools is an open source implementation of VMware Tools from third parties and contains utilities that enhances virtualization management, administration and functions of the virtual machine in VMware environments. The ultimate goal is to enable the operating system vendors and/or communities and virtual appliance vendors to bundle VMware Tools into their product releases.

# yum install open-vm-tools
Option 2 :

1. Install prerequisites :

# yum install perl gcc make kernel-headers kernel-devel -y

2. Attach the vmware tools sofware from vSphere client.

Install VMware Tools For Backtrack 5 Running Via VMware Player On Windows 7

If you are running a Backtrack VM via VMware Player on Windows 7 then you will want to make sure that VMware Tools is installed. This will allow your host OS to communicate properly with the guest Operating System which in this case is Backtrack 5 release 2. The VMware Tools description page also lists the below items as enhancements when VMware Tools is installed on the guest operating system.

List Of Enhancements When VMware Tools Is Installed On Guest OS:

  • Low video resolution
  • Inadequate color depth
  • Incorrect display of network speed
  • Restricted movement of the mouse
  • Inability to copy and paste and drag-and-drop files
  • Missing sound

One of the main items for me is the ability to copy and paste between the host operating system and the guest operating system. While it is pretty clear cut how VMware tools is installed it may not be a snap for someone new to Linux and thus new to Backtrack so the steps below should assist. The below instructions should be very similar for numerous flavors of Linux including CentOS, RedHat, Fedora, Ubuntu, Backtrack, etc.

Install VMware Tools On Backtrack 5 r2 Guest OS Via VMware Player On Windows 7:

  1. Launch VMware Player With Backtrack 5r2: VMware Tools is installed while the guest operating or in this case Backtrack 5 r2 is running so launch VMware Player on Windows 7 and boot the Backtrack virtual machine. Login to Backtrack and start X by typing “startx” from the CLI which will boot X Windows and provide a GUI desktop you are more familiar with.
  2. Mount VMware Tools Media: Now with VMware Player running Backtrack as the active window click on Virtual Machine from the top navigation and select Install VMware Tools from the drop down. The below example image displays the menu location however since VMware Tools is already installed the actual menu item is Reinstall VMware Tools instead of Install VMware Tools.By selecting Install VMware Tools from the menu an ISO image will be mounted that includes the VMware Tools installer for the guest operating system which in this case is Backtrack 5r2.
  3. Copy VMware Tools Installer: Open a Terminal window in Backtrack and change the directory to root’s desktop as shown in the below example command. Next copy the VMware Tools installer to the desktop using syntax similar to the second example command below. Please note that the syntax may be a bit different depending on the VMware Tools version being installed on the guest operating system.
    1. cd /root/Desktop/

    2. cp -p /media/VMware\ Tools/VMwareTools-8.8.2-590212.tar.gz .

Again if the VMware Tools version has changed the syntax will be a bit different so during the cp command above you can hit Tab on your computer after typing VMwar. Make sure to not forget the “.” at the end of the cp command as that tells cp to copy the file specified to the current directory.

  4. Unpack VMware Tools Installer: Now use tar to unpack the contents of the VMware Tools installer by issuing a command similar to the below. Please note again that the syntax may be a slight bit different depending on the VMware Tools version being installed.
    1. tar -zxvf VMwareTools-8.8.2-590212.tar.gz

This will create a sub directory on your desktop that has all of the necessary files needed to install VMware Tools on the guest operating system. The sub directory will be named “vmware-tools-distrib”.

  5. Launch VMware Tools Perl Install Script: Change into the vmware-tools-distrib folder and launch the VMware Tools Perl installer script which will be named vmware-install.pl. The example commands below show how to change into the proper directory and then what to type to launch the VMware Tools installer.
    1. cd vmware-tools-distrib/

    2. ./vmware-install.pl

You will be asked a bunch of questions during the VMware Tools install process but the default answers are fine for each one so you just need to hit the Enter button whenever a question comes up. Make sure to read each question though in case there are any issues along the way or in case you want to change one of the default locations or what have you. When the VMware Tools Perl install script is complete the output will look similar to the below.

    1. You must restart your X session before any mouse or graphics changes take

    2. effect.

    3.

    4. You can now run VMware Tools by invoking "/usr/bin/vmware-toolbox-cmd" from the

    5. command line or by invoking "/usr/bin/vmware-toolbox" from the command line

    6. during an X server session.

    7.

    8. To enable advanced X features (e.g., guest resolution fit, drag and drop, and

    9. file and text copy/paste), you will need to do one (or more) of the following:

    10. 1. Manually start /usr/bin/vmware-user

    11. 2. Log out and log back into your desktop session; and,

    12. 3. Restart your X session.

    13.

    14. Enjoy,

    15.

    16. --the VMware team

    17.

    18. Found VMware Tools CDROM mounted at /media/VMware Tools. Ejecting device

    19. /dev/sr0 ...

To complete the installation and enable the VMware Tools functionality you need to restart X Windows either by logging off and logging back in or rebooting. I would personally recommend rebooting to ensure that everything is functioning properly and since it is a VM I don’t think rebooting is as big a deal.

You can test VMware Tools functionality by copying something within the Backtrack 5 VM and then attempting to paste it to Notepad on Windows 7. You can now share folders between the Backtrack VM and the Windows 7 host operating system by configuring this within the Virtual Machine settings.
